Carolina Panthes Cut Dan Morgan & Mike Wahle In First of Cost Cutting Measures

The Carolina Panthers released linebacker Dan Morgan and guard Mike Wahle in the first of many cost cutting measures. By one estimate the Panthers were roughly $6 million under the projected NFL salary cap of $116 for the 2008 League year with only 35 players signed. Wahle was reportedly scheduled to count against this year's cap for $7.242 million and Morgan for $4.55 million, so the Carolina will free up considerable space with today's moves.

Once thought to be the next great middle linebacker, Morgan had only played in 59 of the teams 112 games since being drafted, due to a variety of injuries and concussions. Last year's 1st rounder Jon Beason filled in admirably for Morgan, and the speedy LB will presumably take over the starting role for good next year.

Wahle was a steady but not spectacular starting left guard, who started all but 3 games during his 3 year tenure with the Panthers, and who should quickly be snapped up once free agency starts February 29 2008.
