NIU Cancels All Sporting Events This Week In Wake of Shooting That Left 6 Dead

Northern Illinois University has announced that all sporting events this weekend. Canceled events include men's and women's MAC conference basketball games, men's and women's tennis, women's gymnastics and track & field, as well as men's wrestling and golf.

On Thursday, former NIU student Steven Kazmierczak openened fire on NIU's campus in De Kalb Illinois, shooting 22 people total, including himself. Four people (including the gunman) died on site, and 2 later died at area hospitals. The 27 year old Kazmierczak brought a shotgun and two handguns into a geology lecture at Cole Hall and opened fire on the classroom, before ultimately taking his own life. He had reportedly stopped taking his medications for a mental health issue a few weeks before the incident, and ironically had studied 'mental health issues' in school.
